How to install Windows 11 on HP Pavilion 31.5″ All-in-One Desktop PC when no disk drive is shown during installation

Background

The HP 31.5″ Al-in-one Desktop PC has a SSD hard drive which is not seen by Windows 11 when doing a fresh installation. When you boot up the computer using a Windows 11 installation disk and you get to the section of Where do you want to install Windows? no hard drive is shown and therefore it is not possible to proceed with the installation.

Solution

The solution is to download the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver from the HP website, extract the .exe file using 7-zip and copy the extracted folder to the Windows 11 installation disk.

  1. Go to the HP website and find driver download page for your particular model of HP PC.
    eg. https://support.hp.com/za-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-31.5-inch-all-in-one-desktop-pc-32-b0000i/2100828701
  2. Expand the Driver Storage section
  3. Download the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver
    eg. sp138817.exe
  4. In File Explorer, right click the downloaded file and select 7-zip and then Extract files.
  5. Select your Windows 11 USB installation disk as the destination folder.
  6. Click OK.
A new folder will be created on your USB disk with a name of the file you downloaded.
