We have always felt that inkjet printers are a waste of money. Yes, they are incredibly cheap given that you can buy one for around £30 but it's the high cost of the cartridges that gets to me. So let me explain how you can save money and also get a far superior product with faster print times and better quality.
Laser printers
Laserjet printers have been around for years and if you work in a corporate office it is highly likely you have them. The print quality is superior to inkjet and it also doesn't smudge!
If most of your printing is text based or graphics based then you should definitely consider buying a laserjet printer. It is generally considered that photos are best printed on an inkjet but personally if you like to print lots of photos then I think you should consider taking them to Boots, Snappy Snaps or use an online service such as Photobox.
Inkjet printers
Inkjet printers have also been around for years. They are most popular in the home market but believe they are false economy. Even though you can pick up a printer for as little as £30 you'll end up spending nearly double that getting some black and colour cartridges for it. The cartridges never seem to last very long either!

There's no doubt that replacement cartridges for laser printers cost a lot of money. A new black cartridge is going to cost you around £45 but will also give you around 1400 pages.
For the colour cartridges you need 3 - Cyan, Magenta, Yellow. At around £50 each this will cost £150 and give you around 1300 pages.

Colour laserjets with built in scanner
A lot of inkjet printers come with a built in scanner so you can scan and photocopy documents. There are colour laserjet printers with exactly the same functionality. We like the HP MFP 178nw All-in-One Wireless Laser Printer available from Currys for £199.
It comes with cartridges which will give you around 700 pages of black and 500 pages of colour. You can scan documents with high resolution.
Laserprinters are bigger
It is worth pointing out that laserprinters are much larger than inkjet printers. It's worth checking out the dimensions to make sure it will fit in the space you intend to have it.
